Senior Class Pictures 

We will be taking the Senior Class picture Thursday, Sept. 21, for the yearbook. Report to your 1st period class then meet by the principal's office to load the bus to go to the Paullina Lake. Wear jeans & a shirt (black, white, or gray) without big words or logos.



Congratulations to Bailey Rohlfsen for earning honorable mention for her science fair project at the National Genius Olympiad in New York this past summer. Bailey competed against over 500 students from 70 countries around the world. This is a great honor for her at a "World" competition event! Way to go, Bailey!

T-Shirt Orders 

Today is the last day to order a homecoming shirt. Please turn in your order by the end of the day today.


Volleyball Games at HLP 

The volleyball games at HLP on September 19 will be Cteam and Varsity only. Cteam will start at 6:00.


8th Grade Volleyball Practice 

8th grade volleyball practice will be at Primghar with Coach Roberts this week.


Homecoming T-Shirts 

Homecoming t-shirt orders are being taken through Tuesday, Sept 19. Order forms were emailed to all 7-12 students. Please print a form or get one from the office. Payment must accompany your order. If there are questions, please see Mrs. Poeckes.

Open Gym 

We will have open gym on Sundays from 5 pm until 6 pm in the West and East gyms. It is for all sports, ages and genders. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Clay County Fair 

The FFA Livestock and Demonstration Teams will leave from the High School @ 9:30 a.m. tomorrow (Saturday), Sept. 16th. and return around 4ish . You must ride the bus there and back unless I receive a signed note from Mr. Bruder.

Worship service 

Come to First Presbyterian Church in Paullina this Sunday, September 17th at 9:30 am for a special worship service featuring Happy The Dog Ministries. Happy The Dog is made up of gifted speakers and praise and worship leaders. It will be an exciting hour filled with great praise and worship music. Check out for more information.


Homecoming Court 

We will be voting for Homecoming Court during Homeroom on Weds, Sept 13 and King and Queen on Thu, Sept 14. All students need to report to their homerooms on those two days.


Kid's Bible Club @ The American Reformed Church 

All K-8th graders are invited to Kid's Bible Club at the American Reformed Church in Primghar on Wednesdays after school from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm, beginning Sept. 13th, 2017. Parents are invited to attend the free evening meal beginning around 5:00 p.m. More information will be handed out the 1st week of Kids Bible Club. For more information, please contact Dennis or Lori Heemtra at (712) 261-0157. They will meet kids at the east fence of the school ground in Primghar and walk them to the church. Please send a note to your child's teacher giving them permission to attend this activity.

Volleyball Spirit Shirt Forms 

The South O'Brien volleyball team is selling spirit shirts. Order forms are in the high school office or online. The order forms are due, with payment, on September 7 (THE DATE ON THE FORM IS WRONG AS IT SAYS SEPTEMBER 6, THURSDAY IS THE 7). Please return to Coach Wassom or the offices.

Sibley XC Results 

The cross country team had a successful outing in Sibley Tuesday evening with the boys finishing 8th and the girls 4th in a tough field of 2A schools. Peyton Brasser led the guys with a 7th place finish and Abby Boardman led the girls getting 2nd overall. Everyone else cut considerable time off their previous races. Our next meet is Saturday morning starting at 9 in Holstein. We would love to see you all there supporting the team! Go Wolverines!

School Picture Order Forms 

7-11 students, please see your assigned homeroom teacher today during homeroom to pick up a school picture order form.

FFA Meeting 

Tonight (Thursday) September 7th in the Ag Room.

Meeting will take place following the Cow Tongue Football Game (10 minute time limit on the game).

Food to be served following the meeting.

If you are attending the meeting, let Mr. Kumm know before you leave school today if you will be eating a hamburger or hotdog (and how many of each).


XC Apparel Order Forms 

The deadline for submitting your cross country apparel orders has been extended one day. Please get your orders turned into either the high school office, coach Lichter, Mr.Yates or Mrs. Yates by the end of school on Wednesday the 6th. Thanks!

South O'Brien Lifters Qualify for Nationals 

Congratulations to Caden Hale, Hunter Irwin, and Josh Simm! They competed July 29 in Minneapolis at the Midwest Nationals and qualified for the World Association of Benchers and Deadlifters (WABDL) world championships in Las Vegas in November. They each won first place in their division and all 3 set state of Iowa records.


Online classes 

Tuesday, September 5 is the last day to drop online classes.


7th Grade VB 

7th Grade volleyball players please get dressed as quickly as possible at 3:25 when you get dismissed and load the shuttle bus for Primghar in the basketball courts parking lot.

Softball Meeting 

All 9-12 softball players meet in Coach Struve's room for homeroom today.


8th Grade Homeroom Meeting 

8th graders interested in becoming involved in FFA will have a homeroom meeting in the Ag Room this Friday.


CNA Class 

Any junior or senior or sophomore TAG student interested in taking a CNA class this fall through NCC should sign up in the office by Thurs, Aug 31. The class would be held here at South O'Brien.

Soil Judging Practice 

Practice takes place each morning @ 7:45 a.m. in the Ag Room. NO experience necessary ! 8th graders are welcome to attend practice.

Sophomore FFA Members 

Sophomore FFA members interested in attending the National FFA Convention will have a homeroom meeting this Thursday.

Precision Ag & Animal Science Day 

Needed--19 students interested in learning about careers in Precision Ag and Animal Science at an event being held at the Iowa State Research Farm near Calumet on Thursday, September 7th. We will leave at 8:30 a.m. and return around 2:30 p.m. Sign-up in the Ag Room.


State Meats Evaluation 

Congratulations to the State FFA and 4-H Meats Evaluation Teams. They did an outstanding job representing South O'Brien and O'Brien County.

Community Announcement
The Primghar Community Vacation Bible School forms are in the elementary school office in Primghar for anyone that is interested. The cost is $10 per student or $25 per family. Contact info is included on the forms. Thank you.

Camp Okoboji pamphlets are available in the elementary office for anyone that is interested again this year.

Oakdale VBS & Fishing Day 

Oakdale Evangelical Free Church has VBS forms and pamphlets on their annual fishing day (with Joel Gnade at Mill Creek State Park near Paullina) -are available in the elementary office. Feel free to pick up a form if you're interested.

Volleyball Team Camp 

Volleyball girls please check your team camp forms that were handed out yesterday at the meeting. Make sure it says the correct grade level. Some were handed out to high school girls that say 6th-8th grade. See coach Dreckman if you have questions. Also, the start date for open gyms is June 8th, NOT June 6th.

Junior High Volleyball Camp 

Junior high girls, there is another camp opportunity this summer in Paullina. See coach Dreckman for details today or email coach Wassom.


Volleyball Off-Season Meeting 

There will be a meeting for all girls going out for high school volleyball next fall on Thursday, May 25, in the high school lunchroom. Meeting will start at 3:45 and should only take about 20 minutes. If you cannot attend please contact Coach Wassom or get a copy of the information from a teammate.

Class President Elections 

Students who are interested in serving as their class president should sign up in the high school office by the end of the day on Friday, May 19. Candidates will give speeches to their class during homeroom meetings on Monday, May 22. Students will vote for their class presidents immediately after the speeches are finished.

FCA Trip 2017 

8th grade students interested in going on next fall's FCA trip (Valley Fair, Vikings game, etc.), see Mr. Brasser this week if you still want to go. The deadline is extended through this week. You must communicate with him ASAP on your intentions. See him if you lost your information sheet or have any questions.

Junior Pizza Lunch 

On Thursday, May 18 all juniors are invited to eat the pizza lunch they earned from the student council by winning the Pride Week competition. Pizza will be served in the commons during A Lunch. All juniors are asked to eat during A Lunch this day.


Student Body President Assembly 

All 8th-11th grade students will attend a homeroom assembly today to hear speeches from the candidates for student body president. Voting will occur during homeroom tomorrow.


Student Elections 

Elections for student council have changed. This year students will choose a student body president, class presidents and student council representatives. There will no longer be vice president, secretary or treasurer positions.

Students who would like to run for student body president need to sign up in the office by Wed. May 17. Speeches will occur Thurs. May 18 and voting will be held Fri. May 19.

Students who would like to be a class president need to sign up in the office by Fri. May 19. Speeches and voting will occur on Mon. May 22.

Students who would like to be a student council representative (4 per class) should sign up in the office by Tues. May 23. Voting will occur on Wed. May 24.


Raffle Tickets

Paullina Vacation Bible School 

Zion Lutheran Church / St. John Lutheran Church in Paullina is offering Vacation Bible School this summer. Forms are available in the elementary office for anyone that is interested. Registration begins Sunday, May 7th.

JH Baseball Meeting 

There will be a JH baseball meeting in Mr. Hansen's room today during homeroom.


Cheer & Dance Tryouts 

SOHS Cheer and Dance Tryouts are coming soon! All students planning to try out should complete the information packet located in the office. All information packets are due back to Coach Beth Warnke or the office prior to try out practice! Try out practice: Thursday, May 11, 2017 from 3:30 5:30 p.m. in the East gym of SOHS with tryout auditions to take place on Saturday, May 13, 2017 starting at 9:00 a.m. in the West gym of SOHS.

***If you have a conflict with Tryout practice time there has been an additional time scheduled to learn the material. This date is May 12th at 6:00 a.m. - 7:30 a.m.



All boys in grades 3-7 are encouraged to sign up for youth basketball camp which will be held on June 19-22 from 1 pm until 4 pm in the West gym. Contact Coach Yates if you have any questions!
