Crop Fair Committe Sign-Up 

Looking for something to do during the dark, cold, boring, long days of winter?
Want to become involved in your community? By golly, you should sign-up in the Ag Room to become a member of the FFA Crop Fair Committee. The committe helps the area sponsoring businesses organize, set-up and run the annual Crop Fair held in Paullina. The Crop Fair features agriculture speakers on topics such as weather, markets, agronomy, new technology, etc.

Tournament Worker Schedules 

All Tournament Workers for this Saturday's Youth Boys basketball tournament: Your schedules were shared and emailed to those that I had addresses for. A schedule also exists in the Shared Folder in Mr. Brasser's folder. You can also get a hard copy from him in his room. Please let him know if you have any conflict at all with what he has scheduled for you this Saturday. Please be on time and if working the first games, be there at 7:50am.

Quiz Bowl 

Good Luck to the Quiz Bowl team at the MOC-Floyd Valley competition on Saturday! Departure time is 8:15 AM. Turn in permission forms by the end of the school day Friday.

Blood Drive 

Life Serve will be at South O'Brien for a blood drive on Thursday, Nov. 9 from 9 am - 1 pm in the East Gym. A sign-up sheet is in the high school office. You must be 16 to donate, and students under 18 must have a signed permission form. All students who donate/attempt to donate will have their name entered in a drawing for fabulous prizes. Thank you for giving the gift of life!

Menu Change 

Menu is changed for Tuesday and Wednesday: Tomorrow in Paullina we are going to do the orange chicken menu of Wednesday then on Wednesday we will do the Tuesday menu of the new tortellini.

Students of the Quarter Assembly 

There will be an assembly in the west gym on Monday, November 6 to announce students of the quarter (formerly students of the month) during homeroom time.


Quiz Bowl 

Practice will be held Monday and Wednesday, Nov 6 & 8, at 7:55 in the South Wing Computer Lab. All are welcome.
Please turn in completed permission forms for the MOC-Floyd Valley QB on Saturday, Nov 11.
We will not practice the week of Nov 13-17 due to Iowa Assessments and other conflicts.

Ken's Feed 

Tomorrow morning, Tuesday Nov. 7th, we are pulling the tarp over the corn pile again at Ken’s Feed in Calumet, IA. Any men or women feeling strong, we would love your help. Be there at 6:30 AM! It will only take 10-20 minutes at most. It’s early but you get $20 in CASH as soon as we’re done and a bottle of water to refresh! :)

The registration deadline for the Dec. 9 ACT is Friday, Nov 3. Registration materials and practice test booklets are available in Mrs. Flynn's office.

Arrangements for Jake are to be held at First Reformed Church in Sheldon at the following times:

Football 

Any football player that still has equipment to turn in needs to meet Coach Fuhrman Wednesday (11-1) after school to turn this equipment in. If not turned in by Wednesday, Nov. 1, you will be sent a bill.


NHS Volleyball Tournament

NHS Volleyball Tournament 

Bump, set, donate! Help NHS raise funds for their Adopt-A-Family Christmas by playing in the volleyball tournament Tuesday, October 31st starting at 6 pm. Cost is $10 per player with the winning team having a breakfast pizza and donuts party. Sign up in the high school office with your team!

Quiz Bowl 

The Quiz Bowl team will practice Monday and Wednesday, Oct 30 and Nov 1, at 7:55 in the South Wing Computer Lab. Everyone is welcome!
Our next competition is November 11 at MOC-Floyd Valley.


Girls Basketball 

There will be a meeting for all girls planning on going out for basketball this year in the ICN room at 4:00 on Tuesday (10/31). Also anyone that is interested in being a manager for the girls basketball team this year please email me.

State Cross Country 

Congratulations to South O'Brien's State Cross Country runners and Coach Lichter.
Senior Peyton Brasser finished 26th in the 1A Boys division and Freshman Abby Boardman finished 97th in the 1A Girls division.

Makerspace Items 

Our Makerspace at the Paullina site is up and running! A Makerspace is a spot for kids to play, create, and design. We are always looking for supplies, so if you need to get rid of any of the following, please consider donating to our Makerspace:
-Various craft supplies (paint, brushes, buttons, ribbon, fabric, wood glue, etc.)
-Office supplies (paper clips, rubber bands, pencils, etc.)
-Scrap wood
-Legos or building kits

Supplies may be dropped off at either site. Please designate the items for the library. Thank you!

End of the Year Volleyball Meeting 

We will have an end of the season player meeting on Monday, Oct. 30 at 5:00 in the high school commons. We will provide pizza and pop. All players need to bring their washed uniforms to hand in.

ASVABs 

On Monday, Oct. 30, all juniors will be taking the ASVAB exam. We require all juniors to take this exam. In addition to being the military entrance exam, it provides students an opportunity to see a different picture of their strengths and weaknesses. It also includes a career exploration segment that is very informative.

This exam begins at 12:10, so all juniors will be eating A Lunch.

Kellie Einck 

Congratulations to Kellie Einck and Kelly Puhrmann for earning their American Degrees at the recent National FFA Leadership conference. This is the highest degree that FFA members can achieve. Only 0.6% of FFA members earned that degree this year.

Also to Kelie Einck for being named the National FFA Star Over America in Placement winner at the recent National FFA Leadership Conference. Out of the 4071 American Degree recipients, only 16 were chosen as finalists in the four areas of Placement, Agriscience, Production and Agribusiness. These are the best of the best. To put it in sports terms, this is comparable to winning the FFA Heisman Trophy.


Kansas State Meats Team 

Congratulations to Eric Koehlmoos for placing 5th individually in the university division of Sunday's Cargill High Plains AMSA Meats Evaluation contest.

Scaritage Park 

Come to Heritage Park in Primghar for the haunted village. Times are Friday October 27 from 8pm-11pm and Saturday October 28 from 8pm-11pm. Admission is $8.00 per person and park at the Primghar Golf and Country Club and rides will be provided to the park.

8th Grade FFA Members 

8th Graders who plan to partake in FFA activities this year need to stop over at the Ag Room and give Mr. Kumm some membership information. We would love to have you involved this year--but--no info = no membership, no voting and no food at meetings, no participation in activities. There are NO dues to pay to be a member, but the chapter still needs to pay them, so we would like for you to help with the annual fruit sales to help pay for the dues, so pick up a few Fruit Sales order forms.

5th Grade Boys Basketball 

5th Grade Boys Basketball (Tournament League) forms are available in the office. 1-2 practices during the week and 4-6 tournaments at various locations within 1 hr of the South O'Brien area. Tournaments are usually on Saturdays. Registration deadline: Oct. 21st. If you would like to assist in coaching the boys, please contact Pat Paulsen (712) 229-7354. Cross Country 

Abby Boardman and Peyton Brasser have qualified to run in the 2017 State Cross Country meet in Fort Dodge on Saturday, October 28.
They competed in the 1A Cross Country State Qualifying meet held in Holstein on October 19.
The South O’Brien girls placed 8th out of seventeen teams. Abby finished 8th overall to qualify for state competition as an individual.
The boys placed 6th out of twenty-three teams and beat all War Eagle Conference teams represented. Peyton placed 3rd out of 162 runners to qualify for state competition as an individual.
Congratulations South O’Brien Cross Country teams and Coach Lichter!

National FFA Convention Meeting 

Homeroom meeting for FFA members attending National FFA Convention.


JH Basketball practice 

Boys 7th and 8th grade junior high basketball begins this afternoon after school. All 7th grade boys will report to the East (little) gym for practice. All 8th grade boys need to board the Primghar shuttle IMMEDIATELY after school where normal bus loading occurs. You will practice in Primghar today only. Be prepared with appropriate basketball practice attire.

Tomorrow and Thursday, practice will occur in the West Gym (big gym) for both grades, 7th and 8th.

State Soils Evaluation 

Congratulations to the State FFA Soils Evaluation Team: Zachary Riedemann, Anthony Sells, Angela Nyunt and Jack Farquhar. They earned a Silver rating and placed 16th out of 30 teams this past Saturday in a very close scoring (and very muddy) event--only 10 points out of a top 10 finish.


Art students

Junior Career Day 

All juniors will be attending Junior Career Day on Mon, Oct 9. Please be prompt for school. Students will be reporting to their first period class and then dismissed for the bus at 8:45. They will return to school at approximately 12:15.
