School Announcements


Knights of Columbus Free Throw Competition (local level) 

All Boys/Girls ages 9-14 only are invited to participate in the local level of competition for the 2018 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship.

The local competition will be held Sunday, Jan. 21, 2018 @1:00 P.M. at the HMS high school gym in Hartley.

All participants are required to have written parental consent. Entry forms will be available at both SOS offices.


1st Semester Industrial Tech I 

Your sawhorses and benches have been graded. You need to have them out of the shop by the end of this week. Notify Mr. Kumm if you don't want yours so that someone else can take it home.

1st Semester Plant Science 

Your Plant Science Lab Books have been graded. Stop over to get yours if you want it back, otherwise they will be recycled today.

1st Semester Agronomy 

Your Agronomy Lab Books have been graded. Stop over before Friday if you would like to have yours back, otherwise it will be recycled today.


Prom Theme 

Juniors who want to help narrow down the prom theme choices should meet today during homeroom.

All juniors are invited to vote for the prom theme during homeroom on Friday.


Vet Science II 

Your Vet Science II Lab Books have been graded. Stop over to get yours if you want it back, otherwise they will be recycled today.

New Online Students 

There will be an informal orientation for students taking online classes for the first time in Mrs. Yates room at the beginning of 6th period. It will take about 20 minutes. Please excuse the following students to attend: RJ, Zeke, and Sean. If I missed anyone, please join us.


Adding/Dropping Classes 

The last day to add or drop classes has been extended to Friday, Jan 19. You will need to see Mrs. Flynn by Friday if you want to make changes.


Girls Practice 

Jr Hi Girls basketball players: We all practice in Primghar this afternoon. both 7th and 8th grade girls are to board Mr. Brasser's bus on the East side at 3:30pm.


Dinner Theater 

Pick up dinner theater scripts in Mrs. Faust's room today! We need lots of students involved to help this production come to life!

ACT Registration 

The registration deadline for the Feb. 10 ACT is Friday, Jan 12. Registration materials and practice test booklets are available in Mrs. Flynn's office.

Online & College Comp Classes 

Online and College Comp classes begin Tuesday, January 16.


JV BBB tonight 

The JV Boys basketball game vs MMCRU for tonight will only be 2 quarters and will start at 4:45.

The first basketball bus for tonight will leave at 3:45.

Prom Theme 

Juniors interested in giving input on the prom theme should meet in Mrs. Poeckes' room during homeroom over the next few days.


Class Meeting 

There will be a junior class meeting during homeroom today. ALL juniors are invited to attend.



JETs will be held this Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church.


Elementary Hearing Rechecks 

Elementary hearing rechecks for preschool through grade 5 students will take place on January 8 & 9. This is only for students who did NOT pass their hearing screening in November.


Wrestlers Meeting 

Wrestlers need to meet with Mr. De Zeeuw in the East Gym during homeroom today (Tuesday).


JR Hi Girls Basketball 

All Junior High Girls Basketball Players,

Board the bus on the East side of the school after school.

Bring your uniform and picture forms along to practice.


Online Books 

This will be the final reminder for students to return their books from online classes. You will be billed in January if you have not returned them. The following students need to return their books: Alexis C, Peyton, Delanie, Keaton, Luke, Nicole F, and Molly.


There are new scholarships posted in the guidance office. Some have also been posted on the school guidance webpage. Make sure and check them out!


Junior Concession Stand 

Please check your school email. Mrs. Poeckes has sent out the work schedule for the concession stand on Saturday. If you didn't talk to her, you were put into an open time on the schedule. Please be responsible to be on time, and if you cannot work, please find a replacement.

6th Grade Boys Basketball 

6th Grade Boys Basketball practice will be held at the Zion school gym at 10:30 AM this Saturday, January 6th. Contact Tom Karli for more info.


JH Wrestling 

JH wrestlers need to get on bus #9 immediately after school to go to practice at the Legion. Be there on time!


Love, Inc. class 

Love, Inc. is offering a no cost Faith & Finance class for families or individuals who would like more info on financial guidance.

Jr Hi Practices 

All Junior High students,
Tomorrow, Thursday, will be the first day of girls basketball and wrestling.
All 7th and 8th grade girls interested in playing basketball should meet, in practice attire, in the East gym at 3:30pm, tomorrow, Thursday.
Wrestlers, Mr. De Zeeuw will inform you as to where your transportation will take place to practice.


Wrestler Dismissal 

High school wrestlers are dismissed at 2:40 today. Bus leaves at 2:45 to go to Sheldon.


Generations of Faith cancelled 

Generations of Faith at St. Anthony Catholic church in Primghar has been cancelled for tonight (January 3, 2018).


Makerspace Projects 

Please pick up any Makerspace projects by the end of the day on Friday, December 22. All projects left behind will be gifts for the garbage collectors. Thank you!

Lost and Found 

We have a very nice, very expensive jacket in the office that was left in Mrs. Fish's room. Please stop by the office to claim.

There are many other items of jewelry and clothing in the office. Please stop in to see if any might be yours! Items not claimed by Friday, Dec. 22, will be donated.



High School Christmas Party 

The student council will be treating all 9-12 students to a Christmas party at 2:30 on Friday afternoon. There will be activities in the high school gym, commons and a movie in the library. Please, feel free to switch between activities, but stay in one of these areas.

Be sure to stop in the commons to decorate and eat a Christmas cookie!


Lost and Found 

If you lost your glasses please stop in the office to claim. A pair was found Tuesday on the windowsill in the commons.


Guess How Many Candies in the Jar! 

Come to the library and guess how many candies are in the jar! We have three jars of candy by the circulation desk. You may put in a guess for each jar. Best guess wins the jar and the candy! Winners will be announced Thursday, December 21.


Online Books 

Students taking online classes, MUST turn in their books by TUESDAY, as NCC will be coming to pick them up. If they are not in, you will be billed for them. Thanks.

Tailgate Friday 

American State Bank is hosting an “Indoor Tailgate” in the Court Yard during Friday nights’ basketball game at Unity Christian. They will be serving pulled pork sandwiches, chips, homemade goodies, and pop and water from 5-7:30. A free will donation will be collected for Unity’s Booster Club.

Advanced Woods 

Since Officer Interviews will be taking place in the Ag Room, please enter the East Doors and get to work on your projects.


Wrestlers Meeting 

All Wrestlers should meet Mr. De Zeeuw in the east gym tomorrow (Tuesday, 12-12-17) during homeroom time.

Model UN 

Model UN will meet in the South Wing computer lab during homeroom today.



The high school will be having an assembly entitled "Maximize Your Potential" Monday, Dec 11 at 10:30 in the west gym. The presenter will be meeting with individual classes during the afternoon in the commons. 5th period will be seniors, 6th period will be juniors, 7th period will be sophomores, and 8th period will be freshmen.


Makerspace Closed 

The Makerspace room will be closed today, Monday, December 11, for maintenance. We will be up and running again Tuesday morning!

Officer applications are due TODAY (Monday, Dec. 11th) before 3:45 p.m. Anything after 3:45 p.m. will not be accepted.

Quiz Bowl

Homeroom meeting today for FFA seeking to earn their Iowa Degree and complete Proficiency Awards.

Volunteer Hours Available 

South O'Brien hosts the annual Wolverine Quiz Bowl on Saturday, December 9.
We need volunteers from 8:30 to approximately noon to be scorekeepers in the competition rooms. It is easy to do and you would be paired with a veteran worker who knows the rules and would give you help.

Student council meeting

Fruit Customer Pick-Up 

We need FFA members to help with Fruit Customer Pick-up after school today from 4-8 p.m. We can use your help for whatever amount of time you are available. We will feed you about half-way through.

Advanced Science Opportunities 


If any of you, or, you and up to two partners (three total), are interested in continuing with science fair and FFA agriscience fair research projects, please see Mr. Brasser ASAP. There are great opportunities, scholarships, trips, prizes, and, it's great on college applications.


9th grade dental screening 

9th grade dental screenings on Friday, Dec.1. This will only be for 9th grade students that have not turned in their dental screening form that is required. This will take place in the nurses office in the morning. If you have your dental form, turn into the office as soon as possible. Nurse Brittany


Superhero Science Challenge 

Hey Maker Space and other Superhero science lovers,

Mr. Brasser has an opportunity for all of you interested in using art, science, writing, engineering, and design creativity in designing a new superhero with a plan of how it will "save the world" using science and engineering (STEM) practices. This is a National Science Foundation sponsored activity with prizes of up to $100,000 scholarships, trips to Washington DC, NASA, Disney World, and other really cool local prizes of computers, more scholarships, gadgets, etc. You can go solo, have a partner, or up to a group of three.

Put your gaming expertise to work and get involved!

Mr. Brasser is sponsoring prizes for just our school participants as well!

State Dance Send-Off 

Make plans to come support the dance team on their way to the State Dance Competition. We will be having a send-off for the dance team on Monday, Nov. 27. Free will donation for admission. This will help cover costs to go to state. The dance team will also be performing their routine. This is a great chance to support the dancers and help them prepare for their state competition.


Dance Send-Off 

Come out tonight and support the Dance Team on their way to the State Dance Competition on 11-30 and 12-1. The girls will be performing their state routines as a way to prepare themselves. Please make plans to support the dancers tonight at 6:30 in the West Gym. Free Will donation for admission to assist in the costs for the team to go to state. See you at 6:30 tonight.

IA Assessments Make-Up Tests 

We will be conducting make-up tests for the IA Assessments on Monday and Tuesday of next week, Nov. 21st and 22nd. You will be called to the ICN room when the tests that you missed are being given.

Immunization Clinic 

6th through 12th grade Immunization clinic on Monday, November 20. Starting in the Primghar school at 9:00am and then going over to the Paullina school. Not all student will be receive vaccines; only those who's parents signed them up at the beginning of the school year.


Quiz Bowl 

Practice will be held on Monday, November 20, at 7:55 in the South Wing Computer Lab. All students are welcome. Everyone please write and bring 5 questions to read for practice.


Shirt Order Forms 

There are Girls Basketball Shirt order forms in the office. Please turn them in with payment to the office or give them to Coach Simmelink, they are due Friday, November 17th.

Due to Iowa Assessments, the Seniors will have a 2 hour late start on Mon, Nov. 13 and Tues, Nov. 14. They will also have a 1 hour late start on Thu, Nov. 16. Enjoy!

Crop Fair Committe Sign-Up 

Looking for something to do during the dark, cold, boring, long days of winter?
Want to become involved in your community? By golly, you should sign-up in the Ag Room to become a member of the FFA Crop Fair Committee. The committe helps the area sponsoring businesses organize, set-up and run the annual Crop Fair held in Paullina. The Crop Fair features agriculture speakers on topics such as weather, markets, agronomy, new technology, etc.

Wrestlers need to get forms distributed on Friday to Mr. De Zeeuw ASAP.

FFA members: All fruit sales orders are due TODAY, Tuesday, Nov. 14th ! Place all of your orders on the spreadsheet Mr. Kumm emailed you and then hand in your spreadsheet (or share it to his gmail: and all individual sales sheets.

Book Fair at the Elementary School
