Academics


Internship Friday Lunch Reminder
-Seniors who attend internship placements off campus on Fridays can get school breakfast and lunch on Thursdays to bring to placements the next day.

-Meals will be distributed after school on Thursdays in the gym from 3:27pm-4:00pm



PAID Summer Internship at Fermilab
The TARGET Program at Fermilab is a highly competitive, paid, six-week summer internship opportunity for Illinois high school sophomores and juniors who have a strong interest and demonstrated aptitude for physics, mathematics, computer science and engineering. The program’s goals are to encourage high school students to undertake college study and pursue careers in STEM disciplines.

Program Dates: June 25-August 3, 2018

Athletics


Pride Basketball Student Section
BASKETBALL 'PRIDE SECTION'

For all home basketball games, Speer Academy will open the 'PRIDE SECTION'. Each night, the first 30 students entering the gymnasium will be admitted free of charge.

All Speer students attending home basketball games will be directed to the Pride Section, standing room only.

Students in the PRIDE SECTION are responsible for building a positive, Noble-like, atmosphere inside the gymnasium, during the game.



Boys Rugby
BOYS RUGBY

Boys Rugby pre-season will begin Sunday, January 14th and continue each Sunday throughout January & February. Practice will begin at 10:00 AM sharp and conclude at 12:00 PM.

Girls Soccer
GIRLS SOCCER MEETING

To all students interested in participating in Ladies Soccer this Spring, there will be an informational meeting on Wednesday, January 24th. Students attending this meeting must be seated in the gymnasium bleachers at 4:00 PM.

New Driver's Ed Theory
Students - 16 years and above,

A new driver's ed theory class will start February 8 and go until May 16. This class is every THURSDAY. Only those who can commit to every Thursday, for 10 Thursdays, should sign up.

Registration forms are available in the front office area. See Ms Cheung with the completed form AND your student dashboard printout. Once Ms Cheung confirms that you are eligible for the course, you must pay the front office $75 to secure your spot.

Upperclassmen: Go to morning lab, after lab, go to gym and sit with your lab instructors.

Underclassmen: you will be dismissed from 5th period at 2:55pm to the gym, sit with your 5th period class & teacher. there is NO afternoon lab.

Afterschool snacks will be in the foyer, instead of the gym this day only.

Perry Outreach Program
Who: Girls interested in medicine and engineering:
When: Sat, 4.28.18
What: ​The Perry Outreach Program is a free, one-day, hands-on experience for high school women who are interested in pursuing careers in medicine and engineering. Students will hear from women leaders in these fields and try it for themselves by performing mock orthopaedic surgeries and biomechanics experiments.

Shedd's High School Marine Biology Opportunity -- in the BAHAMAS
Do you want to be a marine biologist, but aren’t sure where to start?

Apply for Shedd's HSMB!

First, go behind the scenes at Shedd and work with Shedd experts to learn about unique Bahamian flora and fauna, research techniques and important environmental issues.

Then travel to the Bahamas and live aboard Shedd’s research vessel, the R/V Coral Reef II.

CurioCITY Career Event at the Field Museum
Come hear from a Chicago FBI Agent in Forensics Investigation (Evidence Response Team) and a Field Museum Shark Biologist who will speak about their career paths. This event is free and includes museum admission, snacks, fun activities and sweepstakes for high school participants!

After School Matters Spring Programs
-The application window is open for After School Matters' spring programs!
-Apply to participate in high quality, hands-on, project-based apprenticeship programs in a variety of content areas, including the arts, communications and leadership, sports, and STEM.

Girls Who Code Summer Immersion Program
Attention Sophomore and Junior Girls:

The Summer Immersion Program is a FREE 7-week summer program to learn computer science, gain exposure to tech jobs, and join a supportive sisterhood of thousands of girls across the US!

The SIP is an introductory Computer Science course, and no previous experience is required. We welcome all eligible applicants who have an interest in technology and a willingness to learn!
